The 10 to 12 million Roma, with European citizenship, are among the groups on our continent who are most marginalised. Many of them live under inhumane conditions.
FUEN is committed to be in solidarity with the Roma. As the largest umbrella organisation of the minorities in Europe, it can use the expertise of its members to the benefit of the participation of the Roma in all areas of public and political life. Minorities have proven social and intercultural skills, which makes them suited to act as mediators and bridge-builders.
From this basic idea – which was formulated in the “Eisenstadt Declaration”, FUEN developed the project “Solidarity with the Roma – Minorities Helping Minorities”.
The project presents a new model to improve the living conditions of the Roma with the help of other European minorities. The project is supported by the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and was funded by the Hermann Niermann Foundation and the Robert Bosch Foundation.
The solidarity between the minorities that we strive at is not just of relevance for the Roma population. It enhances the position of all minorities and the way they are perceived by the population as a whole. When the solidarity between the minorities leads to a solution to a pertinent problematic situation, one thing will be clear: minorities embody added value for the society at large.
