A new milestone: 350,000 signatures for the Minority SafePack Initiative!

- Press releases

The petition campaign for the Minority SafePack Initiative reached a new milestone, announced FUEN President Loránt Vincze on December 8th. 350,000 citizens of the European Union have signed the petition for the European Citizen’s Initiative since the beginning of the campaign late September this year. The petition was signed on paper by 265,000 EU citizens and online by an additional 85,000, on www.minority-safepack.eu.

Hunor Kelemen, The President of the RMDSZ, the organisation of Hungarians from Romania announced on Friday that they have already collected 231,000 signatures in Romania, far exceeding the country’s threshold of 24,000. With 40,000 signatures collected Slovakia is also above its threshold with almost 4 months to go until the end of the campaign. Hungary is above the national threshold as well, while Austria, Latvia and Denmark are close to achieving it. One million signatures are needed for the Minority SafePack Initiative whereby at least 7 EU countries have to reach their national threshold before the end of March.

“Europe is changing from day to day, not always in the direction we would want. But every change also brings with itself a chance for us. We can earn a better Europe for ourselves if we are present where the decisions about our communities are taken, if we are ready with our proposals, if we know how to fight for them. Europe cannot remain indifferent to the demands of the autochthonous minorities, it cannot diminish the role and the importance of protecting minority languages and cultures. We must act, we must work consistently and persistently to achieve this goal”, said FUEN President Loránt Vincze.

Would you like the EU to offer protection to the autochthonous national minorities of Europe? Join us and sign our petition at minority-safepack.eu! Together we can make Europe a place where every citizen feels at home!
