The Assembly of Delegates at the FUEN Congress 2018 in Leeuwarden/Ljouwert adopted a pact between majority and minority. The document shows that „we need a pact between minorities and majorities to create favourable conditions for linguistic and cultural diversity to thrive, to preserve and promote the identity of the minority communities, to stop their assimilation, to make them feel entirely at home on the territory where they have been living traditionally, to have a say in decisions that affect their lives, and to exercise autonomously their cultural, educational and linguistic rights.”
FUEN asks majority communities from all over Europe to join the movement for minority rights, to listen to the national minorities and language groups without prejudices, to help them becoming EU citizens with equal rights. “We need to work together on a local, regional and European level, as we aim to put minority agenda on the European agenda”, says the document.
“Be part of history in the making. The Minority SafePack Initiative can be one of the most important achievements in the history of the EU, and together, we are the ones who can make it happen”, ends the call to action.
The Assembly of Delegates authorised the FUEN Presidium to decide together with the Citizens’ Committee the date of submission of the statements of support for the Minority SafePack to the European Commission. “Taking into account the political circumstances of Europe and the future changes in the institutions of the European Union, the Presidium should choose the most appropriate time for the submission of the MSPI signatures to achieve the best possible recommendations of the initiative’s demands”, says the approved document.
The delegates adopted several resolutions. FUEN condemned the division of municipalities in the region of the Macedonian minority in Albania, which complicates the existence of the inhabitants. The organisation called on European institutions to support the Russian national minority in the Baltic region in its aim to preserve its national identity, including the preservation of the Russian language education system, and to pay more attention to the problem of stateless persons. They formulated an appeal to the government of the Republic of Slovenia to support their autochthonous German-speaking community. FUEN raised its voice against the fact that the properties of the foundations belonging to the Rhodos, Kos and Dodecanese Turks/Muslims in Greece are sold off forcibly and are being demolished. The FUEN Assembly of Delegates urges the Government of Greece to recognize the ethnic Turkish minority. FUEN called on the Russian Federation and Ukraine to immediately take measures to protect the rights of the Crimean Tatars, and further called on Romania to recognise the Arman community. The delegates of the FUEN Congress 2018 demanded from the authorities of the states of Brandenburg and Saxony that the matters of the Sorbs/Wends find particular attention in the structural development of Lusatia.
At last year’s Congress in Kolozsvár/Cluj-Napoca/Klausenburg it has been decided that the FUEN Congress 2019 will take place in the Ukraine. This decision was now reaffirmed, and the location of the Congress 2020 has been voted on: the Hungarian Community Party will welcome the delegates in 2020 in Košice /Kassa.
The FUEN delegates also accepted the application for ordinary membership of the Kosovo Youth Union Association, representing the Turks from Kosovo, and the associated membership application of Fondazione „Agostina Piccoli” representing the small community of Molise-Croats in Italy.
“FUEN’s 63rd Congress confirmed the new status of our organisation. After the most successful year in the FUEN’s history, we have a stronger, larger, more dynamic and more stable organisation, and, as our guests at the Congress have repeatedly confirmed, a real agenda-setter in Europe regarding minority rights. This Congress was a good opportunity for us to formulate a common vision about our future, our role in a changing Europe and about the ways in which our goals can be achieved”, FUEN President Loránt Vincze said, also thanking local organisers Ried fan de Fryske Beweging and the city of Leeuwarden/Ljowert for being the hosts of the FUEN Congress 2018.
