The Minority SafePack Initiative made history. It is the first initiative to win a case at the European Court in Luxembourg against the Commission’s decision to refuse registration of an ECI. But the hard part is still ahead of us: we need to gather 1 million signatures within a year to support the initiative, and we need to get more partners to join us in this quest. The discussion leading up to the start of the petition campaign was led by the President of FUEN, Loránt Vincze.
"The attitude towards autochthonous national minorities in Europe has changed since we launched the Minority SafePack Initiative in 2013. The attitude of the European Commission has also changed: today it is open to dialogue, and it is open to hear the voices of European citizens. The MSPI is a tool with which we can draw the attention of European decision makers towards the inequalities before the law in Europe” – stated Hans Heinrich Hansen, chairman of the Citizen’s Committee.
“The RMDSZ committed to collect 250.000 of the necessary 1 million signatures that the Minority SafePack Initiative needs in order to succeed. This will only be possible if we plan together, if we work together. We need to clearly state our message: we are not in the wrong; we are on the right side. We mean to take nothing away from the majority communities!” – stated president of the RMDSZ, Hunor Kelemen.
Lawyer Thomas Hieber pointed out that the FUEN drafted a comprehensive, ponderous set of legislative measures for minorities in Europe. The European Commission needs to formulate a position regarding the current issues and include the proposals of the Minority SafePack Initiative into an EU level framework next year – the lawyer said.
The official start of the MSPI petition campaign is scheduled for tomorrow at the Bánffy Castle in Bonchida, Romania.
The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) is the largest umbrella organization representing 100 million European citizens belonging to a national minority. The 62nd FUEN Congress is taking place on the 17-21 of May at Grand Hotel Napoca, in Cluj-Napoca, Kolozsvár, Klausenburg, Romania. Representatives of 50 member organizations, over 300 delegates and guests are attending the event covered by more than 50 journalists. The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) is the host of the event.
